What is Guarana? Is It Really the "Elixir of Youth?"

guarana

Native to the exotic Brazilian rainforest, the indigenous peoples consider Guarana Powder the “Elixir of Youth” and deem it as valuable as gold due to its myriad of health benefiting effects.

The word guarana comes from the Tupi-Guarani word warana, which means “fruit like the eyes of the people.” That’s because the plant produces coffee bean-sized fruit that contains a black seed surrounded by white flesh, which gives it the appearance of an eyeball.

A study conducted at the University of Tasmania found that Guarana produced the greatest alertness and improvement in the performance of mental tasks

Whilst coffee produced a peak in alertness after 30 – 45 minutes, this rapidly fell away in comparison to the effects of Guarana which were still continuing, and increasing, after 150 minutes. This may be due to its naturally occurring caffeine being released slowly, thus maintaining a steady supply of natural energy.

Guarana Powder Benefits:

Guarana is a Natural Energy Booster

What makes Guarana so popular is its natural caffeine content.

Also known as “Nature’s Rocket Fuel”, the Guarana bean holds more natural caffeine than any other plant.

The active ingredient in the Guarana plant is guaranine – chemically identical to caffeine. However, in its natural form it is bound to the fibre of the seeds, meaning its stimulating component is released slowly, giving you hours of energy.

Because of this, guarana is a common ingredient in sports and energy drinks.

Guarana May Help with Weight Loss

Guarana not only gives a physical and mental boost, it also contributes to weight loss with its promotion of thermogenesis – the way our bodies convert food to fuel.

Guarana is a rich source of caffeine, which may boost your metabolism by 3–11% over 12 hours. A faster metabolism means your body burns more calories at rest.

Used for centuries by the Guarani Tribe as a natural appetite suppressant, they would consume guarana when about to undergo extensive periods of fasting. This effect is thought to be caused by the unique set of compounds in Guarana slowing down the rate at which food is absorbed – leaving you feeling fuller for longer.

Guarana May Be Great For Your Skin

We all know wearing sunscreen is a great way to protect our skin from harmful UV rays, but caffeine can help too!

Studies show caffeine’s antioxidant properties protect cells against the UV radiation and shows anti-aging properties by slowing down the process of photoaging of the skin.

Other studies have shown that the antioxidants in Guarana may significantly reduce age-related skin damage.

Guarana is Rich in Antioxidants

Guarana is powerful antioxidant – this is thought to be due to the phytochemicals; procyanidin, catechin and tannin.

In fact, Guarana has an antioxidant profile similar to that of green tea.

Antioxidants are important because they neutralize potentially harmful molecules called free radicals. These molecules can interact with parts of your cells and cause damage linked to aging, heart disease, cancers and other diseases.

Guarana May Enhance Physical and Mental Performance

Guarana doesn’t just rely on caffeine to provide energy and stamina – it contains xanthines which have been shown to enhance physical and mental performance.

Also containing flavonoids and alkaloids, in clinical studies alkaloids were shown to stimulate the central nervous system, enhancing alertness, mental clarity and reducing fatigue.

Guarana May Protect Against Cancer

While more research is needed, there are some promising studies that show guarana’s anti-cancer effects.

So far, studies show guarana protects against DNA damage, suppresses cancer cell growth and even trigger cancer cell death.

Another test-tube study found that guarana suppressed the growth of cancer cells in the colon, as well as stimulated their death.

Researchers hypothesize its due to the xanthines in guarana, which are compounds that are similar to caffeine and theobromine.
